Cubs Sign 12 International Free Agent Prospects
Unfortunately, I cannot report on the Cubs signing any MLB free agents, due to the lockout I mentioned in a previous article: Is the 2022 MLB Season in Jeopardy? but the Cubs have signed five IFAs, some of which seem like pretty good signings.
SS Alexis Hernandez
Hernandez is the brother of current Cubs' prospect Cristian Hernandez and seems like he also has some good talents. Jesse Sanchez from MLB gives the following description on him:
"The athletic Hernandez has a chance to be a five-tool player and shows lots of potential. He is going to play in the middle of the field, but whether that’s at shortstop or in center is still to be determined because he can play both. What’s more, the 17-year-old has the ability to be a plus runner and has a plus arm. He shows emerging raw power and a high baseball IQ. He has developed into an exciting player with solid makeup."
He ranks No. 18 on MLB's Top 50 International Prospects, and I'm excited he gets to join his brother and the Cubs.
Here is a little video on Hernandez:
3B/INF Adan Sanchez
Sanchez ranks No. 43 on the top IP list but is still viewed as a valuable prospect. Here is MLB's write-up of him:
"One of the most intriguing prospects on the market, Sanchez has a powerful bat and versatility on defense. He wowed scouts with his 6-foot, 190-pound frame, projectable body and strength. The offense-first prospect has seen action at pitcher and third base, but his potential behind the plate also makes him appealing. As a catcher, he shows athleticism and emerging defensive skills with the potential for a plus arm."
So, definitely an interesting prospect, and I'll be interested in seeing how the Cubs utilize and train him.
UPDATE
The Cubs have signed 12 IFA prospects for a total of $5,179,700. Here is the complete list:
-RHP Freylin Silvero
-SS Sandy Sanchez
-SS Darlin Leon
-OF Josias Ramirez
-SS Moises Fibrillet
-C Yidel Diaz
-OF Albertina Belliard
-SS Alexis Hernandez
-INF Adan Sanchez
-SS Jefferson Rojas
-OF Josefrailyn Alcantara
-C Carlos Altuve
They signed a grand total of 5 shortstops in these 12 prospects, which is pretty interesting. They also only signed 1 pitcher, which isn't too surprising.
It's been awhile Cubs fans. I've been pretty active on Twitter, so if you haven't yet, give me a follow there. There's plenty of Cubs blogs out there, with my personal favorite being Bleacher Nation. So I don't intend to just repeat or say the same things others are saying, but I want to provide my thoughts on certain things that might differ or be new to Cubs fans. Basically, I want to write brief articles on different Cubs related topics that might be new or original. This is just a hobby for me, so don't expect articles every single day. I'll also be sharing some thoughts of others from Twitter that I found interesting. If you're interested in writing for Cubbies Gazette, DM me on Twitter or email me at cubbiesgazette@gmail.com. Thanks for all of your support on Twitter, and as always, GO CUBS GO!
Yep. I want Carlos Correa too. He's a great defensive and offensive player that would add a lot to the Cubs. I hate to burst your bubble, but it's not a guarantee that he's signing with the Cubs. They may be the front runners for him, but with the new CBA contract in the future, and the price...it's still not a given that the Cubs will get Correa. So, as a backup, I made a list of some of the top defensive shortstops in the league who could be possible trade options for the Cubs if they don't get Correa. 1. Nicky Lopez Lopez was the top defensive shortstop in 2021, having a 24 OAA (Outs Above Average) according to Statcast. That was not only the great thing about Lopez in 2021. He had a .300/.365/.378 with a 106 wRC+ and a 4.4 WAR. He had a low 13.1% K rate and a good 8.7% BB rate. Although he never hits the ball hard, and his 26.9% HardH rate is in the bottom 3% of the league, his success is obvious. His 2021 season was the first time in his three-year MLB caree...
Just to start off, it was good to see the Braves beat the Dodgers, and even more satisfying seeing it was a walk-off hit by Austin Riley. Still hoping for a Red Sox/Braves World Series- it'd be a nice change of pace. Anyway, back to our topic for today: The Cubs' Defense. Overall ranking for defensive efficiency, the Cubs ranked no.20, just ahead of the Marlins and just behind the Twins, so certainly not good, but hey, the Cubs aren't number 30! Since a lot of fielding stats are confusing and probably won't mean much to you, I'm just going to highlight a few areas and explain them in everyday terms. 1. Shortstop and Second were a BIG Problem. A total of 41 errors of the teams' 87 errors were made at second or shortstop. That's almost half of the teams' errors at two positions! Javier Baez made an obnoxious total of 18 errors at shortstop before he left (strange for a guy who was a gold glove finalist in 2020), and Sergio Alcantara made 9 errors in his ...
