Cubs Rumors and Updates: Seager Brothers, Cubs Sign IFAs, and Other Tidbits

First off today we're going to start with an overall somewhat shocking piece of MLB news:

Eduardo Rodriquez is gone. But to the Tigers on a 5-year deal before the CBA negotiations are done? That is surprising. The Tigers are certainly being aggressive this offseason, but being this aggressive on a higher-end free agent and then signing him to a 5-year deal? That might spark more moves of this sort before December 1st.

I have mentioned before how I thought Rodriquez would be a good Cubs target, but I guess that never happened, and the race was down to the Tigers and Blue Jays before the Tigers got him.

Now for some Cubs news: The Cubs have officially hired their assistant pitching coach, one who served as a pitching coach in the Yankees' organization for years.

Again, I see the Cubs drawing from successful teams that are successful in different areas. Guardians, Rays, Astros, Brewers, and now the Yankees show the information and success the Cubs want to copy.

The Cubs have made some International Free Agent prospect signings today as well as shown here:

These include 4 pitching prospects listed here:

  • LHP Kevin Valdez, 20
  • RHP Jensi Ramirez, 17
  • RHP Yafrerlyn Vasquez, 17
  • RHP Eligio Paredes, 17
One wonders why the Cubs did this. I have my own opinion, starting with the fact that Hawkins is now in control. He has experience in pitching development, like we've mentioned before. Perhaps he saw something in these pitchers that he is looking to bring out and use to build up the Cubs' system. Remember, he helped develop pitchers like Bauer, Kluber, Bieber, and others, so don't take his pitching moves lightly...

Now for some interesting rumors that happen to involve two brothers...

Corey Seager first. The Cubs have been "doing their homework" on the FA shortstop market for a while now, and we've heard some Correa rumors, some Story rumors, and now for some Seager rumors. Although perhaps this has more weight to it. Correa is drawing tons of interest, most from the Tigers, but Seager isn't drawing as much attention.

Except from the Cubs now. There is an open spot at shortstop, like we've mentioned before, and Seager seems like he would be a perfect fit. He batted .306/.394/.521 in 2021, which shows some good power that is missing in the Cubs line-up.

Another interesting thing to note is that RJ Anderson is the one who correctly predicted Darvish to the Padres in 2020. He is the same one now that is predicting that Seager's landing place will be with the Cubs, which now I'm inclined to think would be more probable than Correa.

Could I see Corey Seager in a Cubs uniform playing at shortstop? Right now it's more of a dream, but if it happens, yeah I could see him playing in a Cubs jersey. 3-4 year deal with Seager? Absolutely. When the Cubs start competing again, it'll be nice to have a playoff-experienced shortstop penciled in.

Not only is Corey Seager getting attention, but his brother Kyle is as well.

How about it? I sure don't see any reason why not. Seager hits well (and he's a lefty- something that's missing in the Cubs lineup), and I'm not too sure Wisdom is going to last at third all year long.

In fact, Call To The Pen puts the Cubs in the top 3 landing places for Kyle Seager.

A brother duo in the Cubs infield? Two power bats that would impact the Cubs' lineup? Two solid defenders (and gold glove winner) to add to the bargain? Sign me up!

Articles Coming Again to Cubbies Gazette?

It's been awhile Cubs fans. I've been pretty active on Twitter, so if you haven't yet, give me a follow there. There's plenty of Cubs blogs out there, with my personal favorite being Bleacher Nation. So I don't intend to just repeat or say the same things others are saying, but I want to provide my thoughts on certain things that might differ or be new to Cubs fans.  Basically, I want to write brief articles on different Cubs related topics that might be new or original. This is just a hobby for me, so don't expect articles every single day. I'll also be sharing some thoughts of others from Twitter that I found interesting. If you're interested in writing for Cubbies Gazette, DM me on Twitter or email me at cubbiesgazette@gmail.com. Thanks for all of your support on Twitter, and as always, GO CUBS GO!

AFL Update, Cubs Injuries Update, and Other Cubs Tidbits

Just a quick update: I'll be uploading more frequently now, but quite a few will be shorter articles with a few quick updates. Stroman Recruiting Correa, David Bote and Jason Heyward Projections, and Other Cubs Tidbits

With the news that the Cubs have "a serious interest" in Correa, a lot of Cubs fans (and players) have been going berserk about potentially getting Correa. That includes new Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman, who has yet to play one game with the Cubs but is actively recruiting. See what he said here: Need you in Chicago my dawg! @TeamCJCorrea https://t.co/JihQciRvai — Marcus Stroman (@STR0) December 22, 2021 That's right, and don't stop saying it! Correa playing in a Cubs uniform would be fantastic, and I don't want to be pessimistic, but we still have to wait until this "lockout" is over...and then the Cubs can sign him. David Bote Projections David Bote had a very bad year in 2021, like I wrote about a few weeks ago here:  What Is David Bote's Role With the 2022 Cubs?   and he ended up 64 wRC at the end of the season. Going into the 2021 season, he was projected to hit pretty well, but he really underperformed, batting .201/.280/.340 with a 68 wRC b...
