Cubs Roster Moves, The Hot Stove Begins, Cubs Front Office Moves and Other Cubs News

The Offseason Has Begun. And with it floods of moves; DFAing, signing FAs, trades, and the list goes on. The same is true for the Cubs, who had to bring their roster down to 40, since 5 players on the 60 day IL had to be reinstated, bringing the current roster to 43. So, the Cubs made some moves.

  • Trayce Thompson was outrighted
  • Nick Martini was outrighted
  • Kohl Stewart was outrighted
  • Jonathan Holder was outrighted
"Outrighted" means that they will be sent to Iowa and become minor league free agents. Other teams can sign them to minor league deals, or the Cubs could resign them, which I doubt would happen.

That brings the Cubs' roster down to 39, meaning they can sign a FA, or get a player off waivers (what happened to Schwindel). Of course, they'll be trimming the roster down more, making room for prospects that need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft, and signing other FA.

The players that were outrighted didn't really bring much value to the Cubs, save for Thompson who was decent... So, in the long-term course of things, the Cubs just have to do what they have to do.

Other MLB tidbits:
  • Buster Posey announces he will be retiring. That comes as somewhat as a shock as he was a stellar catcher for the Giants this past year, but it's the case.
  • Nick Castellanos opted out of his contract and is now a free agent. Possible Cubs target?
    • Mariners lefty Yusei Kikuchi elected free agency. Also an interesting option for the Cubs.
    • The Reds traded catcher Tucker Barnhart to the Tigers for a 3B prospect. The first official trade of the offseason.
    • The Brewers signed reliever Trevor Gott to a Major League deal. The first FA signing of the offseason as well.
So no major Cubs moves yet, no signing free agents, etc. But a lot of that has to so with the CBA negotiations, like I've mentioned before. The Cubs will no doubt make a few smaller moves, but regarding "signing Carlos Correa" for example, won't happen yet.

The Cubs have made some front office moves lately...
    • The Cubs hired the Rays' minor league hitting coach Greg Brown to be their new hitting coach
    • The Cubs got former Brewers scout Pete Vuckovich Jr.

I see the direction the Cubs want to move in. See the pattern? They're getting front office people from the Cleveland, Astros, Rays, and Brewers- all teams that have been successful in all areas of the baseball realm- including scouting, development, stratagem, and other vital parts of winning.

Anyway, that's all I have time for today, but I'll have an article out on Saturday, so see y'all then!

Reliving the Cubs' 2016 Postseason Highlights

As we enter the final stretch for baseball in 2021- a Braves/Astros World Series, it's a good time to look back at memorable Cubs' history in 2016, when the Cubs broke a 108 year WS win drought to beat the Indians in the World Series. The Cubs cruised to a 103-58 standing at the end of the season, getting the NL Central pennant and meaning they'd face the winner of the Wild Card, who ended up being the Giants. Game One of the NLDS Jon Lester threw 8 shut-out innings, Chapman closed the 9th with a shut-out against the Giants and Javier Baez solo-homered in the 8th to give the Cubs a 1-0 win against the Giants and get the 1-0 series lead. Game Two of the NLDS Kyle Hendricks started the game, only allowing 2 runs, and he drove in 2 runs himself in the 2nd with a single, but he left the game in the 3rd due to a line-drive injury. Reliever Travis Wood replaced Hendricks, and hit a home run, yes a home run in the 4th to give the Cubs a 5-2 lead. That was the first homer to be hi...

Saturday Cubs News: CBA Negotiations, More Contreras and Correa Rumors, Would Baez Return, and Other News

Braves shut out the Astros last night, including no-hitting them into the 7th inning, which gives them the 2-1 series lead, so that's good news to me. Let's start out by a few MLB news tidbits. The Padres hired Bob Melvin, who was the current Athletics manager, to be their new manager. Although a pretty abrupt move out of nowhere, Melvin is a manager with lots of experience who has managed a team that has been making the playoffs the last few years, and maybe will help guide the Padres in that direction. The PETA wants to rename "bullpen" to "arm barn" saying that the former is offensive to cows. I won't say too much on this so I don't lose my temper, but THE COWS DON'T EVEN WATCH MLB! One of the most ridiculous things I've heard in baseball for a while now... Albert Pujols, one of the more ancient specimens in baseball right now, is going to be playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, and said that he wasn't ready to retire yet. ...

    Evaluating the Cubs' Defense

Just to start off, it was good to see the Braves beat the Dodgers, and even more satisfying seeing it was a walk-off hit by Austin Riley. Still hoping for a Red Sox/Braves World Series- it'd be a nice change of pace. Anyway, back to our topic for today: The Cubs' Defense. Overall ranking for defensive efficiency, the Cubs ranked no.20, just ahead of the Marlins and just behind the Twins, so certainly not good, but hey, the Cubs aren't number 30! Since a lot of fielding stats are confusing and probably won't mean much to you, I'm just going to highlight a few areas and explain them in everyday terms. 1. Shortstop and Second were a BIG Problem. A total of 41 errors of the teams' 87 errors were made at second or shortstop. That's almost half of the teams' errors at two positions! Javier Baez made an obnoxious total of 18 errors at shortstop before he left (strange for a guy who was a gold glove finalist in 2020), and Sergio Alcantara made 9 errors in his ...
