Cardinals Sign Steven Matz, Miguel Amaya's Injury, and Other Cubs Tidbits

Ok. So much news and updates and rumors it is hard to sort through it all. The biggest news right now is that LHP Steven Matz signed with the Cardinals.

The Cubs had come down to the top 5 in offers to Matz, and although he would have been a nice addition to the rotation, I'm not too upset about it. I'm more upset he signed with the Cardinals... But apparently the Mets are pretty upset about it, and Steven Cohen took his wrath to Twitter:

Alright, it's ok to be disappointed, but chewing out a players' agent...I wonder who's being more unprofessional here.

Another big signing, this time with the White Sox, who signed yet another closer. I mean, having a bullpen full of closers isn't really necessary, and the White Sox are well on their way to doing that. Right now, they have 3 closers (Hendricks, Kimbrel, and now Graveman), although they'll be trading Kimbrel.

Pretty soon they'll be signing Jansen, Iglesias, and all the closers on the market!

Another piece of big news was that MLB moved the tender deadline to November 30th.

The reasoning behind this is that tendered players can sign with a team before the lockout begins on December 2nd. So, likely there will be several tendered players who will be quickly signing with a team in two days.

A couple rumors to chew over:

I still wouldn't mind the Cubs signing Gausman, but now I've come to the conclusion that it probably won' happen.

By the way, the Yankees released Frazier and Odor...I know the Cubs already got Ramirez, but would they target Frazier too?

My guess would be no, because other teams are likely to be more interested than the Cubs, and with young outfielders like Davis, Valezquez, and others ready to move up soon, it probably wouldn't be wise to have too many outfielders.

A big piece of Cubs news that is pretty discouraging:

That's pretty tough for a guy who hasn't really had any playing time the last couple years, and is supposed to be the heir to Contreras. Tommy John surgery can knock you out for at least 6 months, and even up to a year, so I'm not too optimistic that he'll even get any playing time in 2022.

That leads to the big question: are the Cubs going to extend Contreras? I really, really want them to, and now with Amaya held back, they can't really afford to lose their main catcher. So, bad news there, and also shows a weakness in the Cubs farm system.

A lot of news, and likely more to come, so stay tuned on Cubbies Gazette, and get the latest news if you follow me on Twitter.

Articles Coming Again to Cubbies Gazette?

It's been awhile Cubs fans. I've been pretty active on Twitter, so if you haven't yet, give me a follow there. There's plenty of Cubs blogs out there, with my personal favorite being Bleacher Nation. So I don't intend to just repeat or say the same things others are saying, but I want to provide my thoughts on certain things that might differ or be new to Cubs fans.  Basically, I want to write brief articles on different Cubs related topics that might be new or original. This is just a hobby for me, so don't expect articles every single day. I'll also be sharing some thoughts of others from Twitter that I found interesting. If you're interested in writing for Cubbies Gazette, DM me on Twitter or email me at cubbiesgazette@gmail.com. Thanks for all of your support on Twitter, and as always, GO CUBS GO!

Top Defensive Shortstop Trade Options for the Cubs

Yep. I want Carlos Correa too. He's a great defensive and offensive player that would add a lot to the Cubs. I hate to burst your bubble, but it's not a guarantee that he's signing with the Cubs. They may be the front runners for him, but with the new CBA contract in the future, and the price...it's still not a given that the Cubs will get Correa. So, as a backup, I made a list of some of the top defensive shortstops in the league who could be possible trade options for the Cubs if they don't get Correa. 1. Nicky Lopez Lopez was the top defensive shortstop in 2021, having a 24 OAA (Outs Above Average) according to Statcast. That was not only the great thing about Lopez in 2021. He had a .300/.365/.378 with a 106 wRC+ and a 4.4 WAR. He had a low 13.1% K rate and a good 8.7% BB rate. Although he never hits the ball hard, and his 26.9% HardH rate is in the bottom 3% of the league, his success is obvious.  His 2021 season was the first time in his three-year MLB caree...

Evaluating the Cubs' Defense

Just to start off, it was good to see the Braves beat the Dodgers, and even more satisfying seeing it was a walk-off hit by Austin Riley. Still hoping for a Red Sox/Braves World Series- it'd be a nice change of pace. Anyway, back to our topic for today: The Cubs' Defense. Overall ranking for defensive efficiency, the Cubs ranked no.20, just ahead of the Marlins and just behind the Twins, so certainly not good, but hey, the Cubs aren't number 30! Since a lot of fielding stats are confusing and probably won't mean much to you, I'm just going to highlight a few areas and explain them in everyday terms. 1. Shortstop and Second were a BIG Problem. A total of 41 errors of the teams' 87 errors were made at second or shortstop. That's almost half of the teams' errors at two positions! Javier Baez made an obnoxious total of 18 errors at shortstop before he left (strange for a guy who was a gold glove finalist in 2020), and Sergio Alcantara made 9 errors in his ...
