Saturday Cubs News: Front Office Reshuffling, Shortstop Free Agent Market

Well, well, well. The Astros have shown themselves as dominant as ever, punching their ticket to the World Series in a win against the Red Sox. Braves and Dodgers will have Game 6 tonight, and Braves fans will hope that this year is not a repeat of 2020, when the Braves were up in the series 3-0 and the Dodgers game back to win 4 games in a row. I'm hoping so too...

Now on to some Cubs news: The Cubs' Senor Vice President of Player Personnel, Jason McLeod is departing the Cubs' organization. Here is the exact tweet:

That is indeed big news, as he was in the Cubs' organization for 10 years, starting in 2011 with Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. This shows the direction the Cubs are going in. They do not intend on rebuilding as they did in 2011, but a quick rebuild, focused on a couple main things:
  • Free agents and trades that are lower-cost (although the Cubs will likely spend big on one or two players), have good zone control, and are consistent hitters.
  • Building up current rookies and other minor-leaguers in the farm system. Rookies like Wisdom, Rivas, Hermosillo, Alzolay, Steele, Thompson and others will be top-priority. That's why it is important to transition into coaches, managers, etc. that can help these players differently than before.
  • Building a solid farm system that will produce quality players in years to come. Brennen Davies, Ed Hertz, Cory Abbott, and others are the first batch to be ready. Keep the quality coming is a Cubs goal.
Other Front Office moves:
  • Assistant General Manager Randy Bush is also stepping down, meaning that Hoyer wants people like new General Manager Carter Hawkins who view things a little differently.
  • The Cubs didn't leave the Assistant GM spot vacant for long. Ehsan Bokhari, longtime exec for the Houston Astros, is now the new Assistant GM. The Astros have been a consistently successful team for the last few years, so copying their success isn't a bad idea.
That's the main front office moves for now, and it shows the direction the team wants to go in. Copying successful teams like the Indians (for developing quality pitchers and players), and the Astros is a good route to take.

The Shortstop Rumors

A little on the Short Stop FA Market. A Cubs rumor has it that the Cubs are "a likely suitor for one of the top-tier shortstop FAs". Specifically, Trevor Story and Carlos Correa. While the idea of the Cubs getting one of those shortstops is tantalizing, I'm not too sure if it'd be realistic. I think Correa would make the most sense, Corey Seager also being a good second option, but I don't think it is going to happen.

While the shortstop spot is an open spot for the Cubs (though Hoerner is a good option, he is injury-prone), I'm not sure if getting one of the top FA shortstops is in the Cubs' plans. Maybe it is, and they're going to sign Carlos Correa to a 4 year deal, but I doubt it.

Anyways, excited for the Cubs' future...and I hope you are too! The best place to find the latest Cubs' news, rumors, evaluations, and fun is on Cubbies Gazette!

  1. A signing of correa, wouldn't make sense, cuz, accident prone, not good cubs, just won't work. Trevor story, makes a little more sense.

Reliving the Cubs' 2016 Postseason Highlights

As we enter the final stretch for baseball in 2021- a Braves/Astros World Series, it's a good time to look back at memorable Cubs' history in 2016, when the Cubs broke a 108 year WS win drought to beat the Indians in the World Series. The Cubs cruised to a 103-58 standing at the end of the season, getting the NL Central pennant and meaning they'd face the winner of the Wild Card, who ended up being the Giants. Game One of the NLDS Jon Lester threw 8 shut-out innings, Chapman closed the 9th with a shut-out against the Giants and Javier Baez solo-homered in the 8th to give the Cubs a 1-0 win against the Giants and get the 1-0 series lead. Game Two of the NLDS Kyle Hendricks started the game, only allowing 2 runs, and he drove in 2 runs himself in the 2nd with a single, but he left the game in the 3rd due to a line-drive injury. Reliever Travis Wood replaced Hendricks, and hit a home run, yes a home run in the 4th to give the Cubs a 5-2 lead. That was the first homer to be hi...

Articles Coming Again to Cubbies Gazette?

It's been awhile Cubs fans. I've been pretty active on Twitter, so if you haven't yet, give me a follow there. There's plenty of Cubs blogs out there, with my personal favorite being Bleacher Nation. So I don't intend to just repeat or say the same things others are saying, but I want to provide my thoughts on certain things that might differ or be new to Cubs fans.  Basically, I want to write brief articles on different Cubs related topics that might be new or original. This is just a hobby for me, so don't expect articles every single day. I'll also be sharing some thoughts of others from Twitter that I found interesting. If you're interested in writing for Cubbies Gazette, DM me on Twitter or email me at cubbiesgazette@gmail.com. Thanks for all of your support on Twitter, and as always, GO CUBS GO!

Evaluating the Cubs' Defense

Just to start off, it was good to see the Braves beat the Dodgers, and even more satisfying seeing it was a walk-off hit by Austin Riley. Still hoping for a Red Sox/Braves World Series- it'd be a nice change of pace. Anyway, back to our topic for today: The Cubs' Defense. Overall ranking for defensive efficiency, the Cubs ranked no.20, just ahead of the Marlins and just behind the Twins, so certainly not good, but hey, the Cubs aren't number 30! Since a lot of fielding stats are confusing and probably won't mean much to you, I'm just going to highlight a few areas and explain them in everyday terms. 1. Shortstop and Second were a BIG Problem. A total of 41 errors of the teams' 87 errors were made at second or shortstop. That's almost half of the teams' errors at two positions! Javier Baez made an obnoxious total of 18 errors at shortstop before he left (strange for a guy who was a gold glove finalist in 2020), and Sergio Alcantara made 9 errors in his ...
